Agency is a gift and a responsibility. Sometimes we are afraid to make choices, because we risk failure and/or pain and we are tempted to shift that responsibility onto others or even onto God, for them to make the decision for us and tell us what to do. When we do so we not only reject the gift of freedom to choose, we also deny ourselves an opportunity for growth. It also goes the other way, it means we cannot force others or try to make them do as we wish, even when we see they’re headed for disaster. We can only change ourselves.

Love is not only a feeling, it’s also an action and an ability. That’s why we are told “love one another.” It doesn’t come by itself. When we lock our hearts and build up walls we become prisoners of fear. We may be spared pain and suffering but we’ll forfeit the joy that comes from being truly close to another and we’...ll never grow. Choose to love.

It’s often difficult to see a loved one make decisions we don’t like (friends, family, significant other) and refrain from trying to tell them what to do and give advice only when asked. It takes a lot of love, courage, patience and trust to let them find their own way
